MIGRAIN Assessment 1: learner response

My Learner Response: MIGRAIN assessment 1

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW:

Jaspreet, a very good effort into your first Y12 Media assessment. Q2 on social and cultural contexts was a strength e.g. your focus on uses of stereotypes

Next steps:

1. Consider other narrative codes (theories) you could have referenced for Q1. e.g. Propp, Todorrov, (see mark scheme and make flashcards).

2. Similarly for Q3, not enough genre theories (see mark scheme and make flashcards)

Grade- C , Mark- 19/29

2) Read the mark scheme carefully (this will be posted on your Google Classroom. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1, Todorov: disequilibrium suggested by gun; character eye-line looking off-screen suggests
danger or threat; tagline references ‘survival’; no hint of new equilibrium.

Q2, Nike advert is deliberately ambiguous with character’s anonymity allowing anyone to
imagine themselves as the winner of the ‘Showdown’, working hard to succeed. This reflects
dominant British values and ideologies concerning the importance of hard work, the
possibility of social mobility and rising to the top. The ‘rising sun’ sky in the background
reinforces this possibility of success.

Q3, Abercrombie “television producers set out to exploit genre conventions... economic sense”... “Genres permit the creation and maintenance of a loyal audience.”

3) Read this exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly different paper in terms of the question wording and also had an additional question 4 (we've updated it to better reflect recent exams). Identify at least one potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper that you could have mentioned in your assessment.

Q1) That the poster uses Todorrov's disequilibrium (the gun) as a point of crime and violence within the narrative to help create mystery.

Q2) How a difference in the ethnicities of the two characters reflect modern changes in society from a completely ethnically bias culture to now a more diverse culture within modern society, portrayed in such big brand adverts.

Q3) Abercrombie's idea that exploiting genre conventions makes "sound economic sense" as it helps media producers allow their products to be a success as it is more highly viewed by their audiences, due to the interesting ideas that come out of exploiting key genre conventions.

4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.

I didn't mention any narrative theories in the first question because I was unsure if they were involved in narrative codes so I could have used Propp's character types and Todorrov's theory of equilibrium alongside my use of Barthes' enigma and action codes. I also didn't provide key theories of theorists such as Abercrombie, Tolson and Buckingham in the last question about genre.

5) Identify your weakest question and write three bullet points that would improve on your original response. Use the mark scheme and exemplar paper to identify these points - particularly focusing on the anticipated content and the top level descriptors.

My weakest question was question 3 about genre as I need to revise key genre theories.

  • Genre important for audiences: expectations of narrative, character, plot, style and content; selection and rejection of texts – audience pleasures/gratifications; allows comparison and discussion of media products; recognise developments and evolution in genres.
  • Abercrombie “television producers set out to exploit genre conventions... economic sense”... “Genres permit the creation and maintenance of a loyal audience.”
  • Tolson (1996) suggests that genre "mediates between industry and audience" and Buckingham (1993) " contemporary theory sees genre as dynamic: genre is not simply 'given' by the culture: rather it is in a constant process of negotiation and change.
